(13) Independent service reflection

For my independent service hours I did a couple of things. The main thing I did was babysit kids, I watch one of my friends kids while she worked and I also watch my little brothers for my mother although I was mad because I had to dod this with out getting paid i it was a fun experience. I was also a part of my annual block cleaning with my block captian, I swept pavements and cleaned uo in front of the elders doors. i helped an older guy on my block clean up his house.

(12) service reflection for 5/28/08

On 5/28/08 for service learning me and group members had a full 90 minutes to go to a grocerie store and do some price ranches on the food as if we made a family of 4 and list where they worked and what would be their weekly salary and how much for would they need for all 4 people in total to a month so we ending up going to the red in terminal and I started doing my price ranges from there and the most sucessful thing about that day was everyone was seperated doing their own thing and everything was perfect and we got to leave on time so I wouldn't change nothing about that day that was one of the best days of our service group so I was happy because we actually got to do some hands on things outside of our school instead of being cooped up inside the main office.

Symbols

"Evening of a hot day started the little wind to moving among the leaves. The shade climbed up the hills toward the top. On the sand banks the rabbits sat as quietly as little gray, sculptured stones." (Chapter 1.)
Of Mice and Men is a film that is drowned in symbols to show what Steinbeck wants reader to see. He does a fantastic job of using animals and how they relate to the characters.

First, Candy's dog for example is extremely old, and useless. Just like the dog, Candy is old, broken down and really no use around the ranch. They boss even gave him the job of sweeping up, and keeping up with the chickens, because of his one arm. When reading about the dog, readers think of sickness and how he symbolizes that. Carlson even tells Candy him as "Got no teeth, he's all stiff with rheumatism. He ain't no good to you, Candy." They then tell somehow persue Candy to let them shoot him, because he's sick and if he really loves him, he wouldn't want him to suffer.

Although Candy's dog is alive, he pretty much represents death. Old, miserable, and really is no point for the dog to be alive. Candy's dog and himself are both old and on the verge of death it's kind of pointless for them to be around. However, they are around because they have some life in them. It would be just cruel to kill them but they are suffereing. Bit of a dilemma, wouldn't you say?

Candy and his dog represent, death, sickness and even the ending of dreams. Although they are old and uesless doesn't mean they can't be cured from sickness and off life support, and it surely doesn't mean they can't have dreams. However, Candy for example is a perfect example. He makes plans with George and Lennie, but his dreams cease when Lennie kills Curly's wife and everything is forced down hill. I guess things don't work out in your favor, when you over think things.

In conclusion, Of Mice and Men is a mega awesome novel filled with symbols that represent or reflect a character. This book is a must read because it's filled with loads of english class appliances that any teacher would want their student to read. Trust me, you don't want to upset them, you know english teachers and their lessons on symbols...

Quiz questions English

1. Do you know of a situation, when you had a friend like Lennie, who wasn't able to take up for themselves and you had to be George?

Yes i was in a situation where i had a friend like Lennie who wasn't able to take up for herself. When I was in the 7th grade I had a really quite friend who did all her work and didn't bother anyone, but all the students in our class thought she was a teachers pet. well one day another one of my friends wanted to cheat off of her on a test and she wouldn't let her so my other friend said she was going to punch her after class, i knew my friend was scared so i talked to my other friend and she decided not to hit her.

2. How was the event of Lennie killing Curly's wife, similar to Bigger killing Mary Dalton ?
I believe the killing of Curly's wife was similar to killing of Mary Dalton because both Bigger and Lennie we're alike in those murders. Believe it or not both Lennie and Bigger became nervous and scared, and that was what caused the two deaths of the women. Lennie became afraid that someone would hear Curly's wife and then get in trouble by George. Bigger was afraid Mrs. Dalton would find him in Mary's room, and he would get fired. Both women's death in Of Mice and Men and Native Son are very similar.

3. What do you think was going through Lennie's head when he came to the conclusion that Curly's wife was dead?
Because Lennie is mentally ill, I believe when he found out that Curly's wife was dead he felt confusion more than anything. He felt as though George would be mad at him, for again getting in trouble at a new place, and because of that he wouldn't be able to tend the rabbits. You can tell he was feeling scared and nervous at the same time because he went right to the secret hiding place George showed him if something was to happen. I can imagine that's how Lennie must've felt.

4. What were some of the motives behind George's assiantion of Lennie?
George could have murdered Lennie do to several reasons. It could have been his new loyalty and 'brotherhood' to the new workers his befriended. It could have been because he knew that no matter what he said or did Lennie would always get into some type of trouble and it would eventually only get worse. He could have one it because he didn't want Lennie to suffer. Another reason might be because he could have been sick and tired of Lennie after so many years.

5. What was the underlying theme of the ending plot(Curley's Plot)?
The theme of the plot could have been revenge. It could have also been the downfall of brotherhood. It could be to show that workers follow under the leader of one. Kind of like a dictatorship, it shows that if one person promises you something (money) that if you follow them and do as they say you will eventually follow them even if it goes agianst your will.

6. Why was Curly so Mean and Arrogant?
Curly could have been this way for several reasons. He was the smallest person on the ranch. He always felt that he had something to prove due to his small stature. He could have felt that the world was always agianst him. He wanted the bigger men to fear him. He flaunted the fact that he had a wife, and money. He wanted everyone to feel as though they were inferrior to him.

7. Do you know another instance where someone like Curly did things in order for them to feel good about themselves?
Yes. In the book Native Son the main character Bigger Thomas was the same way. In Native Son Bigger would kill small innocent women in order for him to feel as though he had control. He was truly a coward inside just like Curley. Bigger Tomhs and Curley do differ in very serious ways though. The main thing they have in common is their need to feel superior and be in control of situations.

8. What are some of the problems of George and Lennie’s relationship?
Is that George can’t really have fun because he have to take care of Lennie and make sure he doesn’t get into trouble. It was like having a child you have to give hem your full attention and George didn’t like that idea that much.

9. What were some of the motives behind George killing Lennie himself?
He did that because I think that he should do it instead of somebody who doesn’t care or loved him. He figured if he did it, it would be peaceful instead of him dying by some barbarian who didn’t give a damn about him. So he did it.

10 What was the turning point in the game is that Lennie had to get himself into trouble by killing Curly’s wife?
If he didn’t do that they could have finally lived peacefully instead of running from town to town. They could save their money up and finally get that farm that they wanted. They can’t do that because Lennie had got into some more trouble and that dream came to an end.

(11) extended service hours

Since ms. Martin think I did not take my last service paper serious we will not the attending the next trip. i don"t think thats fair because she told us to make up a family of four and make up a fake salary for our family. the paper said list the four people in your family (you, your husband and your two children), you should also state their age, gender, and occupation. The fact that I said my husband would be a pro football player and together our monthly salary would be 25,000 she thought I took the assignment as a joke which i did not we were supposed to make these things up she said they did not have to be realistic. she also said we had to list different foods we would purchase from the market to feed our families for a month, just because I felt out different meats (meats i do not eat) and other foods she became angry. She was also mad at the fact that i said we would eat out four times a month. I'm not really happy about the way last week service learning meeting went.

(10) service planning for 5-28-08

In tomorrows service learning meeting I plan on going over more ideas on how I plan to help get our school better lunches. I plan on listening to others ideas and and either supporting it or not supporting it. I also plan on trying to get help from my group mates on when we should sell sandwiches but it has to be an available date where there is nothing really going on. I think we should try to sell more things since are group really haven't accomplished anything. Ms. Thompson suggested that all groups should do and outside trip, i was thinking we could go to a fast food restaurant and interview the manager and see if he/she would be willing to sponsor a high school for better lunches.

(9) Service learning reflection

In yesterdays meeting unfortunitely I was absent on that day, but I did get some background info on what they were talking about from one of my group members Katonya who said that they talked about getting better lunches and finding places we could go for help. They also talked about letting Mrs Thompson know that they did not want her on the committiee because she did not want to listen to what they were saying. That is all that they talked about to my knowledge of what my group member told me.

The Weak Man's Strength

“Rudeness is the weak man’s strength”. People who have problems with themselves usually mess with other people to hide their own insecurities. In the book Of Mice And Men almost every character has a weakness, but they use Lennie’s disability to make themselves feel good.
As soon as Curley saw Lennie he got into attack mode, because of Lennie’s towering height. Being around a very larger man like Lennie made him feel unconfident. The moment he Heard Lennie talk he knew he was retarded, and began to pick on him. He soon learned his lesson when Lennie crushed his hand in the “Bunk House Brawl”
Another Character who used Lennie to their own advantage is Crooks. When he invited Lennie into his room his claws came out and he became a predator ready for attack. Crooks’ was a lonely person, so he wanted to make Lennie feel the same way. He pretended that George would not return to the bunk-house after a night in town. He was petrified when Lennie got angry, he thought he was going to hurt him.
The one true friend Lennie had through out the whole story was George. George always took good care of Lennie and never let anyone hurt him. In the end I guess George was a strong person because he did not take Lennie’s short coming and make it a strength for himself. He was a the exact opposite of the quote because he took Lennie’s flaw as if it was something that was normal.
In conclusion in the book Of Mice And Men almost most every character has a weakness but they use Lennie’s imperfection to make themselves feel better. So If you want learn how people use other people weakness to their advantages you should read this book.

(8) Service planning for 5-28

For the next service activity our group did not plan anything yet. I think we should go out for lunch or take a trip to Aramark and set-up meetings for possible sponsors for our school. Since my group did not make any progress in getting a food company to sponsor us in our short time, I suggest we talk to the principle about possibly going out for lunch next year.

"Chasing The American Dream"

(GRADE THIS ONE)
“When I grow up I want a big house with a white picket fence and a handsome husband”, this is what the American dream is all aboot. It’s been said that most people spend their lives chasing the American dream. In order to fulfill this dream you have to be rich, famous, and happy. The book Of mice and men tells a story of many people who long for this dream and try to go after it, but as soon as they get their dreams in the palm of their hands fate takes a turn for the worst.
The two main characters in this book George and Lennie are no strangers to failure. George is an intelligent middle aged man who takes care of a mentally retarded man. George and Lennie have a big dream of living of the “fat of the”, So to reach their goals they work for fifty dollars a month and save their earnings. Every time their almost their Lennie messes up and they have to start over and their dream is lost, but at least they have each other to start over with all the other guys have no one.
Curley’s wife had dreams of seeing her name in lights, she met a road manager on night and he said he would see to it that he would make it happen. She was so naïve she believed him. The same night she met a short, cocky arrogant man named Curley, and her dreams fell in a downward spiral ever since. She is very lonely and is desperate to find someone to talk to, maybe she wouldn’t be ignored if she had become a star.
Curley is a very self-conscious short guy. He had high hopes of becoming a professional boxer but his dreams fell short when Lennie crushed his hand. The reason why Curley hates Lennie so much is because he is so big, every little guy is intimidated by bigger men. Curley is very miserable because he did not live up to his life expectations.
In conclusion the book Of mice and men tells a story of people who long to live the great American life but can’t because of certain circumstances in their life.

(6) Service Planning

The next time our group goes out we plan on going to Aramark. this is a major food distribution company and they sponsor high school lunches. one of our team leaders set up a meeting with one of the managers to see what qualification we need for sponsoring incase were not able to go out for lunch next year. we also plan on getting Ms. Lynn help for next year so we will have the right supplies for better lunches next year. the ninth grade Math teacher Ms. D also have great ideas for our group, her sister works for a food company and we are planning to meet with her for sponsoring help.

(5) Service Planning

As an activity for this week our group went to various different food restaurants. on our trip we had to survey the fast food restaurant we ate at, the survey consisted of:

1. what was your restaurant?
Burger King

2. what kinds of food do they serve?
ham/cheese burgers, fries, sodas pies, chicken fries and chicken burgers

3. what was the highest thing on the menu?
steak house burger meal $7.99

4. What was the lowest thing on the menu?
ham burger .99

5. What would you rate this restaurant as?
5

this was a good experience for our group because it gave us the opportunity to check out different places to eat at for next year. it also showed how mature students could be and it put a good impression on our school.

(4) Service Learning Reflection

cc0 The first group meeting for service learning was a little boring. I thought I was going to switch groups but I stayed and we made progress. thing with our group is we have a lot e of group leaders that are quiet and they can't control the group. sometimes this group really sucks and I don't want to be a part of it because I my ideas really don't count. The group leaders get to decide every thing we do within our group and it's so irking because no one else gets a say in what we do.

Jim's Journey

During this movie the main character Jim changed a lot before, during and after the war. As you watch the movie you can see him grow from helpless young boy to a mature gentlemen.

Before the war James lived with his English parents in China. He was kind of bratty and abuses his nanny. Even though James could be a little snotty sometimes he was thoughtful about the homeless guy that begged for change and food outside his gate. In the beginning you could tell he was rich because of the mansion he lived in and the clothes and school he went to. James changes a lot during the war he even changes his name.

During the war Jim lost his parents along with them he loses money, clothes and food. Shortly after he met Basie, who taught him somewhat how to survive. After meeting Basie he became a thief stealing food and other valuable goods for Basie to trade. He is also naïve to the fact that Basie is just using him. At the very end of the war Jim finds himself, he throws all his memories away and decides he’s not American, he’s not Chinese, or he’s not Japan, he’s just Jim.

After the war Jamie is united with his parents. Being back with his parents I guess he possessed all his riches again. After going from being rich to poor within days I think Jamie has learned the value a family and how it feels not to have parents. After the war I think Jamie was very mature and he is a survivor.

In conclusion James has grown a lot since before the war and he has even grow into different personalities like his different names Jim, Jamie and James all these names have a different personality in the movie.

(3) Service Learning Proposal

Idea:"Global warming" describes the rise in temperature of the earth's lower atmosphere due to the release of heat-trapping greenhouse gases. The impact of this greenhouse effect could be devastating.

Global warming causes ozone depletion, melting polar ice, and rising ocean levels.

Global Warming = Ozone Depletion

The ozone layer, which protects all life from ultraviolet (UV) radiation, is being destroyed by release of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) into the atmosphere. The widening holes in the ozone layer allow in more UV rays, which can cause skin cancers, cataracts, and immune system damage. UV rays are detrimental to pollination, seed production, and marine life food supplies as well.

(2) Service idea

SEND A GET WELL SOON CARD TO A HOSPITALIZED CHILD

Get Well Soon Cards help hospitalized children feel less isolated and lonely.

When a seriously ill child remains hospitalized for months, family visits can become less frequent, particularly when the child is transferred to a specialized hospital far from the parents' home. These parents may have other children to care for, and jobs they must keep to maintain medical insurance or to pay uncovered medical bills.

As a result, children requiring long-term care may get most of their human contact during routine – and often impersonal – treatment from doctors and nurses. While these professionals help with the child's physical pain, there is usually little time to deal with the emotional pain of isolation, confusion, and homesickness.

Sending Get Well Soon Cards to hospitalized children is a wonderful way to help cheer them. This contact, and message of caring, can be the highlight of a hospitalized child's day.

(1) Service learning

For service learning i would like to do elementary school tutoring again, i liked that and think it would be a great idea to do it for a second time. i hope the rules will be more specific this year because last year it was kind of unfair, for and example one rule was no jeans. although some students were able to attend their weekly trips i had to stay back several times because i wore denim pants, so i hope the rules are clear this year since we don't have to wear uniform any more. If elementary school tutoring is not available i would like to do a aids walk or a walk for a cure.

NHD reflection

Personally i really don't like NHD, basically we're the only school that does it. Adding to the bad things about NHD it always take up black history month, i mean i never went to a school where we never did any activity for black history month. i think the students in our school should feel some type of way that we are missing a major part of history in our curriculum. I guess i will just have to deal with it until we graduate. another thing that is concerning me is the things we need credit for like gym is not even mandatory but a two month project that we don't even need to have credits for is mandatory. even though this project was a pain in the neck i liked my project and it sorta kept me on task because if not i would have fell off track. some improvements i need for next year are responsible group members, a fun topic and try a different category.

Bloom's taxonomy

1. Knowledge: Describe what happened in the pool room?

In the pool room Gus, G.H., Jack and Bigger were talking about robbing Blum’s deli, Bigger told Gus he was afraid to rob Blum because he was white. They started fighting and Bigger made Gus lick his knife. When everyone left Bigger went home feeling guilty about the situation.

2. Comprehension: What was Richard Allen’s main idea about the rat in the house?

His main idea was to show the living conditions of blacks in the 1930’s and how they lived in poverty.

3. Application: Do you know another instance where black boys live I poverty?

Another instance where black boys live in poverty, is the Philadelphia projects. They live amongst rats, roaches, and pissy hallways.

4. Analysis: If Mary’s bones were never found what might the ending have been?

If Mary’s bones were never found, for one Bigger would not be on the run. Secondly he probably would not have been blamed for her disappearance or been killed for it. As a result he probably would have lived life not fearing the white man again.

5. Synthesis: Can you see a possible solution for Bigger killing Mary?

Well if I were Bigger I would have done two things. First I would of let Mrs. Dalton know I was in her presence when she walked in the room. Second I would have accepted the consequences and not run away. In the end things would have turned out better.

6. Evaluation: If you were Bidders mother how would you have handled your son’s death?

As Bigger’s mother I wouldn’t be able to deal with his death. First I would just be miserable and stuck on it, then I guess I would just remember all the good about him. Although the hurt would linger I would have to move on and accept that he was in a better place.

Playing White

Summary: Bigger walks to his house to the corner of his block to meet up with his gang. While he's waiting he runs into Gus and they began talking. While they were talking they looked up to the sky because they heard a sound, when they looked up they seen an airplane writing letters in the sky about gasoline. Bigger begin wondering what it would be like to fly a plane. But they knew it wasn't possible because they are African American and African American people can't do anything even if you got money. While they were thinking about this bigger asked Gus to play a game. Gus and Bigger began to play, as they were white, they played as the president and the general. After they were done playing they began to laugh and G.H and Jack walked up and they went in to the poolroom.
Analysis: I think Richard Wright put this scene in the book to let readers know what kind of life African Americans lived. He put the thoughts in readers mind that living where he lived and being the color he was that it ended up being a mistake because no matter what he say or do he will always be Bigger Thomas Big, Black and Mean

Wake up Chicago!

With no privacy, Bigger is immediately waken at his mother's first panic attack, as one unexpected guest gets the day started a little earlier. Screaming, Bigger's mother is hesitant about killing the rat and scaring her daughter, constantly taunting her all hours of the night. With this vivid picture in her mind, it was only a mother's depiction to ask Bigger to be " the savior, their nigth in shining armor." As the man of the house he deheaded the intruder (the rat).

Analysis
Richard Wright sent a wake- up call to Chicago and all of the U.S. Warning them of the monster that they were creating, hopefully giving society time to make changes. Unfortunately, the damage had already taken place because Bigger was the man of the house he was expected to make the money even if it meant changing the tune of the alarm.

The fear inside

Summary -
Bigger and Gus entered the poolroom and it was empty. They were early and Jack or G.H. hadn't arrived yet so while they waited they started a game of pool. Bigger was playing very poorly because he was worrying about Blum's and the robbery, but he was really afraid of the whole thought. They continued to talk about their plan and thats when Jack and G.H. come in. Bigger hiding his fear tried to make himself feel better picked a fight with his Gus. Jack and G.H. ageed to rob Blum's but Gus was still thinking about it. Bigger got aggravated and started an arguement with Gus. While fighting Biger thought of stabbing him, kicking him, slapping him, and he even made Gus lick his knife. After teh fight they all agreed to their plan. By Bigger starting a fight with Gus that was a way to hide his fear and flip the script to make it seem as if Gus was scared. he hid his fear by acting tough and putting on a front for his friends. By doing that Gus was scrared of him and didn't know what he was capable of so he agreedto rob Old Blum's.

Analysis -
Richard Wright was trying to show us two things, the fear inside of Bigger and his fear of showing his friends and even his family who he was. Bigger putting on a front shows that his friends don't really know who he is and their wasn't no family bond between them. Maybe he is scared to show his friends who he really is and they would of took advantage of him because they would of thought he was tough anymore. By letting his guard down he wouldn't feel comfortable his himself. Alot of people hide their fears but some do it in other ways.

Murder of and Heiress pp. 81-93

Summary: After a long night of partying and drinking Bigger and Mary returned to the Dalton house. Mary was a bit drunk so bigger decided to walk her to her room when they arrived Mary started to kiss on bigger, not resisting bigger kissed her back. Shortly after Mrs. Dalton came into Mary’s room, afraid Mary would make noise bigger covered her face with a pillow. She was straining to for him to let her go so she started to scratch his wrist. Once Mrs. Dalton left the room he let the pillow go and realized Mary was not responding. Scared out of his mind bigger picked Mary up, put her in a trunk and took her to the furnace before he took her out, he placed a pile of news paper down on the floor and stuck her in. shoving Mary’s head in was a tough task so he took his knife out and tried to cut her head off, when that didn’t work he found a hatchet and with one swing her head rolled onto the blood filled newspaper pill. He quickly shoved her head in and got rid of the newspaper and hatchet. When bigger got home that night boy was he paranoid. What he doesn’t realize is it was an accident and he could have easily confessed.

Analysis: I believe Richard Wright put this in the book because it is the part in the book where bigger finds a strength he never knew he had, he has the power to assert himself against whites. “Wright’s point is that Bigger becomes a brutal killer precisely because the dominant white culture fears that he will become a brutal killer”.

NHD Topic and Links

Topic Essay

Our topic for Nation History day is The American Revolution. It all began April 19, 1775. For over a decade tension arose between Great Britain and the American colonies. The British government passed a series of laws in an attempt to increase control over the colonies. The colonies did not agree thinking that the government was abusing its power. Colonist protested paying tax and started rebellion. Our subtopic is the battle of Valley Forge because it was a major battle in this great war. Little did they know this would lead to the birth of a new nation.
I picked this topic because we thought it would be a good example of conflict and compromise. I also picked this topic because it is very versatile and has a wide variety of information good for doing and exhibit and it will be enough to fill our whole board.
Since me and the two other sophomores are working with freshmen we are going to collaborate the battle of Valley Forge into My research because their topic has to do with something that happened in Philadelphia. This battle was a major turning point in the Revolutionary War.
Some questions I want to answer in my research are what caused the British government to raise taxes? What would our world be like if we didn’t have a revolutionary war? What would have happened if we would of lost the war? And one more question I have is were the American colonist justified in rebellion against British rule? What is the proper role of a national government?
In conclusion I would like to say the reason I picked this topic is because it is an easy example of conflict and compromise, and it is a huge milestone in America’s history. This topic is a good comparison to the theme of national history day because it is a prime example.
