Topic Essay

Our topic for Nation History day is The American Revolution. It all began April 19, 1775. For over a decade tension arose between Great Britain and the American colonies. The British government passed a series of laws in an attempt to increase control over the colonies. The colonies did not agree thinking that the government was abusing its power. Colonist protested paying tax and started rebellion. Our subtopic is the battle of Valley Forge because it was a major battle in this great war. Little did they know this would lead to the birth of a new nation.
I picked this topic because we thought it would be a good example of conflict and compromise. I also picked this topic because it is very versatile and has a wide variety of information good for doing and exhibit and it will be enough to fill our whole board.
Since me and the two other sophomores are working with freshmen we are going to collaborate the battle of Valley Forge into My research because their topic has to do with something that happened in Philadelphia. This battle was a major turning point in the Revolutionary War.
Some questions I want to answer in my research are what caused the British government to raise taxes? What would our world be like if we didn’t have a revolutionary war? What would have happened if we would of lost the war? And one more question I have is were the American colonist justified in rebellion against British rule? What is the proper role of a national government?
In conclusion I would like to say the reason I picked this topic is because it is an easy example of conflict and compromise, and it is a huge milestone in America’s history. This topic is a good comparison to the theme of national history day because it is a prime example.
