(10) service planning for 5-28-08

In tomorrows service learning meeting I plan on going over more ideas on how I plan to help get our school better lunches. I plan on listening to others ideas and and either supporting it or not supporting it. I also plan on trying to get help from my group mates on when we should sell sandwiches but it has to be an available date where there is nothing really going on. I think we should try to sell more things since are group really haven't accomplished anything. Ms. Thompson suggested that all groups should do and outside trip, i was thinking we could go to a fast food restaurant and interview the manager and see if he/she would be willing to sponsor a high school for better lunches.

(9) Service learning reflection

In yesterdays meeting unfortunitely I was absent on that day, but I did get some background info on what they were talking about from one of my group members Katonya who said that they talked about getting better lunches and finding places we could go for help. They also talked about letting Mrs Thompson know that they did not want her on the committiee because she did not want to listen to what they were saying. That is all that they talked about to my knowledge of what my group member told me.

The Weak Man's Strength

“Rudeness is the weak man’s strength”. People who have problems with themselves usually mess with other people to hide their own insecurities. In the book Of Mice And Men almost every character has a weakness, but they use Lennie’s disability to make themselves feel good.
As soon as Curley saw Lennie he got into attack mode, because of Lennie’s towering height. Being around a very larger man like Lennie made him feel unconfident. The moment he Heard Lennie talk he knew he was retarded, and began to pick on him. He soon learned his lesson when Lennie crushed his hand in the “Bunk House Brawl”
Another Character who used Lennie to their own advantage is Crooks. When he invited Lennie into his room his claws came out and he became a predator ready for attack. Crooks’ was a lonely person, so he wanted to make Lennie feel the same way. He pretended that George would not return to the bunk-house after a night in town. He was petrified when Lennie got angry, he thought he was going to hurt him.
The one true friend Lennie had through out the whole story was George. George always took good care of Lennie and never let anyone hurt him. In the end I guess George was a strong person because he did not take Lennie’s short coming and make it a strength for himself. He was a the exact opposite of the quote because he took Lennie’s flaw as if it was something that was normal.
In conclusion in the book Of Mice And Men almost most every character has a weakness but they use Lennie’s imperfection to make themselves feel better. So If you want learn how people use other people weakness to their advantages you should read this book.

(8) Service planning for 5-28

For the next service activity our group did not plan anything yet. I think we should go out for lunch or take a trip to Aramark and set-up meetings for possible sponsors for our school. Since my group did not make any progress in getting a food company to sponsor us in our short time, I suggest we talk to the principle about possibly going out for lunch next year.

"Chasing The American Dream"

(GRADE THIS ONE)
“When I grow up I want a big house with a white picket fence and a handsome husband”, this is what the American dream is all aboot. It’s been said that most people spend their lives chasing the American dream. In order to fulfill this dream you have to be rich, famous, and happy. The book Of mice and men tells a story of many people who long for this dream and try to go after it, but as soon as they get their dreams in the palm of their hands fate takes a turn for the worst.
The two main characters in this book George and Lennie are no strangers to failure. George is an intelligent middle aged man who takes care of a mentally retarded man. George and Lennie have a big dream of living of the “fat of the”, So to reach their goals they work for fifty dollars a month and save their earnings. Every time their almost their Lennie messes up and they have to start over and their dream is lost, but at least they have each other to start over with all the other guys have no one.
Curley’s wife had dreams of seeing her name in lights, she met a road manager on night and he said he would see to it that he would make it happen. She was so naïve she believed him. The same night she met a short, cocky arrogant man named Curley, and her dreams fell in a downward spiral ever since. She is very lonely and is desperate to find someone to talk to, maybe she wouldn’t be ignored if she had become a star.
Curley is a very self-conscious short guy. He had high hopes of becoming a professional boxer but his dreams fell short when Lennie crushed his hand. The reason why Curley hates Lennie so much is because he is so big, every little guy is intimidated by bigger men. Curley is very miserable because he did not live up to his life expectations.
In conclusion the book Of mice and men tells a story of people who long to live the great American life but can’t because of certain circumstances in their life.

(6) Service Planning

The next time our group goes out we plan on going to Aramark. this is a major food distribution company and they sponsor high school lunches. one of our team leaders set up a meeting with one of the managers to see what qualification we need for sponsoring incase were not able to go out for lunch next year. we also plan on getting Ms. Lynn help for next year so we will have the right supplies for better lunches next year. the ninth grade Math teacher Ms. D also have great ideas for our group, her sister works for a food company and we are planning to meet with her for sponsoring help.

(5) Service Planning

As an activity for this week our group went to various different food restaurants. on our trip we had to survey the fast food restaurant we ate at, the survey consisted of:

1. what was your restaurant?
Burger King

2. what kinds of food do they serve?
ham/cheese burgers, fries, sodas pies, chicken fries and chicken burgers

3. what was the highest thing on the menu?
steak house burger meal $7.99

4. What was the lowest thing on the menu?
ham burger .99

5. What would you rate this restaurant as?
5

this was a good experience for our group because it gave us the opportunity to check out different places to eat at for next year. it also showed how mature students could be and it put a good impression on our school.

(4) Service Learning Reflection

cc0 The first group meeting for service learning was a little boring. I thought I was going to switch groups but I stayed and we made progress. thing with our group is we have a lot e of group leaders that are quiet and they can't control the group. sometimes this group really sucks and I don't want to be a part of it because I my ideas really don't count. The group leaders get to decide every thing we do within our group and it's so irking because no one else gets a say in what we do.
